Good bye, Rio! Hello, normal bed times!
In between rooting for Team USA, googling how one becomes a platform diver, and quickly becoming an armchair judge, I became a die hard fan of USA swimmer and gold medalist, Maya DiRado.
I was sold by her initial story, Maya failed to make the cut for the 2012 London Olympics and thought she would retire. Instead, her coach urged to try one more time, while she also studied and graduated from Stanford, applied and accepted a job with McKinsey & Company in Atlanta. Did I mention she also has Crohn’s Disease? While not faulting other athletes, I loved that she was determined to look past the Olympics and build a life beyond that.
Take a look at this Washington Post profile. It makes me think of the excellent advice I was given by a former mentor, “Never compete against yourself. Know when to leave the bar.”
